Genre Research (Horror)
Our second genre that we chose is horror. Horror is a very unique genre that has its own set of camera angles, Mis-en-scene, sound, editing. There are also many example films in this genre.
Common Angles: The most common angle that is used in horror is a low angle, this angle is used to show the subject, (usually a murder, demon, etc...) as more powerful over another subject, usually the victim. Another common angle that is used in this genre is an eyeline angle. This angle is a very versatile angle that we found common in a lot of genres but its specifically common in this one because it usually is to show the non-remorseful expressions of the antagonist, but also the scared, or nervous facial expressions of the protagonist, or the "good". Overall, these two angles are the most common angles that we see in the horror genre, and how they contribute to the overall film.
Common Mis-En-Scene: In horror, there are also common costumes, lighting, acting, make-up, and props that are used to captivate the film. To start, in most cases, the props used that stand out are knifes, guns, or even other items that can cause injury like crow-bars, or an axe. In hauntings, or ghost horrors movies we saw a common effect of darkness, the absence of lighting that usually was a repeated thing in this genre. Furthermore, the costumes in horror films towards the modern day are usually, like most regular everyday outfits. But what is interesting about horror is how the costumes progress from clean, to dirty, ripped up or even bloody.
Common Editing: Editing is very minimal, there are special effects used in some horror films but not ones with a murderer, special effects are usually used in haunting or ghost films. Although, typical cuts are used and sometimes transitions from black screens are used as a trend of editing in the horror genre. There isn't nothing that stands out as far as the editing then lets say an action film, although there are some cool special effects that are used!
Common Sound: In horror, there are a lot of voiceovers used as sound, to show for example, a mysterious being talking to the subject. Also, orchestral horror screeches, and scary music are used to show suspense, and it really brings the film to life because the music completes the feel, and triggers your emotion.
Example films of horror: Some examples of horror films are: Texas chainsaw massacre, IT, The Conjuring, Get Out.
There are many elements of horror that we like. For example, we like to keep the audience on edge, and how suspenseful that these films can be. We also like horror because it puts mystery on a lot of the characters, like where they came from, or how they got there. Finally, we like this genre because of the versatility that it gives, not every horror film is about a ghost, there is a lot of different things that horror can be evidently be like.
A negative element of horror that we do not like is the fact that the horror genre only appeals to a certain group of people. Its safe to say a lot of people like action movies, or comedy movies because they appeal to emotions like thrill, or happiness. Although there are a more narrow group of people who like horror, not all people like that sense of suspense and fear.
